Equity in IDEA, Final Rule
Students of color remain more likely to be identified as having a disability and face harsher discipline than their white classmates. In December 2016, the U.S. Department of Education published the final Equity in IDEA Rule that requires states to measure for “significant disproportionality” using the same method.

Letter to States Calling for an End to Corporal Punishment in Schools
U.S. Education Secretary John B. King, Jr., released a letter urging state leaders to end the use of corporal punishment in schools, a practice repeatedly linked to harmful short-term and long-term outcomes for students. Accompanying this letter is an “Open Letter from Civil Rights, Education, Medical and Research Groups on the Elimination of Corporal Punishment in Schools.”
