Steps for Applying to a Job

There are three important steps to take while applying for a job when you have a disability.

FIRST STEP: Finding existing services that can help you find open positions

Websites like:

  • Indeed
  • Vocational Rehab (VR)
  • Career Source
  • Career Builder, and,
  • Ability Jobs.

These websites give you the ability to apply and upload your resume online. You can search for jobs according to your area of expertise or you can do job search by title. 

SECOND STEP: Preparing your Resume

Keep in mind that when considering applying for a position, preparing your resume is the first and most important step in the process. Among many, these are some sites that offer free templates:

  • Resume builder
  • My Perfect Resume
  • Resume genius
  • Word documents also have templates available for you to use to make a resume.

A resume should be just a brief written account of personal, educational and professional qualifications, along with experience information related to the job you are applying for.

THIRD STEP: Preparing for the Interview

If the potential employer is interested in learning more about you, he or she is going to invite you for an interview. For that, you will need to prepare in order to be sure you have a good understanding of the job. You will need to be ready to answer questions on the job you applied for.

Remember:

  • Wear professional clothing

  • Bring a resume

  • Be a great listener

  • Make a good first impression

  • Make a closing impression, and,

  • Always do a follow-up phone call to see where they are at in their process.
