Video | Effective Family Engagement Could Look Like This

(2018) | Useful to Parent Centers and school systems interested in building strong family engagement practices in their children’s education and learning.

This 5-1/2 minute video is a product of the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI). It discusses the need to shift the way schools partner with families to help students learn, moving from parent involvement to family engagement. Strongly influenced by the U.S. Department of Education’s guidance on dual-capacity building framework for family/school partnerships, the video describes exemplary practices that schools can use to:

• build trust with families (pre-K through high school);
• connect families to knowledge, information, and tools that support academic learning at home and in the community;
• support educators with time and skills to connect more, and more effectively, with families; and
• collaborate consistently with families and community partners—across programs, grade levels, and buildings—to ensure every student is career and college ready.

The video can be used in tandem with a 2-page handout that distills the DPI’s visualizations of this shift, plus strategies districts can use to get there.
